STATEMENT: Rep. McMorris Rodgers seeks to cover up poor record on higher education with false attack ads

Lisa Brown Campaign     Thursday, September 20, 2018

"The fact is, Rep. McMorris Rodgers knows her own record on higher education is bad, so she's making absurd allegations that aren't accurate. She voted against the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act in 2009, which passed. She voted to cut federal Pell Grants multiple times (2010, 2010, 2015, 2015) and tax graduate student financial assistance, among other moves. In 2014, she voted to prevent 25 million people from refinancing loans at lower rates.

The ad is false -- lawmakers don't set tuition rates. But what's most problematic is that we're in the midst of a student debt crisis, and Rep. McMorris Rodgers doesn't have a plan for ending it. I do -- I’ll work to find solutions by expanding student loan forgiveness programs, supporting the Federal Student Loan Refinancing Act, and working with Sen. Murray to re-authorize the Higher Education Act. I will work to fix this problem.”
